MAP-i Fees
- 2750€ per academic year
If your are financing yourself, it is usually possible to pay the annual fees in two or three installments.
Research Grants / Scholarships
There are a number of possibilities for candidates to apply for (you are encourage to try multiple opportunities):
- MAP-i / FCT PhD grants
In 2007/2008 MAP-i was awarded by FCT a number of PhD grants, both normal grants (BD) and industrial-partnership grants (BDE). We are expecting that at least a similar number of grants is granted for 2008/09.
To apply for these grants follow the usual steps for application to MAP-i, and state clearly in your letter that you are aplying for a MAP-i grant.
The value for a BD grant from MAP-i is the same as a regular FCT BD grant, currently around 980€ per month plus the fees. The value of a BDE grant is the same, but half of the value is paid by a company involved in research project that the student is working on.
Deadline for grant applications: 30th of April, 2008 (New deadline: 15th June, 2008)
- FCT PhD grants (BD)
Every year, FCT announces open calls for candidates to regular PhD grants (referenced as BDs). Usually the call runs from May till June. Please refer to FCT website for dates and instructions on how to apply.
(FCT) Call open until 14/September/2008
- Gulbenkian Foundation PhD grants
The Fundação Caloust Gulbenkian also promotes PhD research grants for Portuguese students interested in doing their PhDs in a Portuguese University.
Open call for applications from 12th May until 18th of June
- CMU-Portugal PhD grants
MAP-i is one of the PhD programs included in the CMU-Portugal initiative. Students from MAP-i with CMU-Portugal grants will be co-advised by faculty at CMU and at MAP-i, will spend 2 years at CMU and 2 years at one of the MAP Universities, and will be entitled to dual PhD degrees from CMU and MAP universities.
In this case you are advised to apply directly at CMU (ECE and CS Departments) and indicate in your statement of purpose your intention to be also connected with MAP-i. You only need one application for both CMU and MAP-i.
Alternatively, you can apply now to MAP-i and separately apply in September to CMU. If you are accepted by MAP-i you can start our programme and if you also get accepted at CMU, all the credits that you have done for CMU accredited courses will be valid at CMU also. In this case you would go to CMU in the Spring semester.
Calls open from late September til mid December:
Computer Science / Electrical and Computer Eng.
- UT Austin - Portugal PhD grants
Within the framework of the UT Austin|Portugal Program (CoLab), funded students can enroll in MAP-i doctoral program to accomplish their PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Advanced Computing.
Enrolled students with a scholarship from CoLab follow the academic plan defined for MAP-i, but their research themes must be related with the area of Advanced Computing, as specified in the official announcement for scholarships. The proposals are proposed by MAP-i faculty and include a co-adviser from UTAustin.
The students will spend
at least one year at UTAustin, preferably their second year.
Transition to the second year is dependant on succeeding on the
curricular courses. While at UTAustin,
students can attend courses that might be relevant for their research
work, or enter an industrial internship if that is considered
important for their research work.
(UTAustin-Portugal) Call open until 8/Sept./2008
- FCT industrial partnership grants (BDE)
This possibility is open permanently. It is possible to apply directly to FCT for a PhD research grant involving an industrial partner. You will need a supervisor from MAP-i, a company interested in supporting you, and a research project that is of interest to all parties and suitable for a PhD.
Please visit the FCT and ADI website for more info on this.
- Project Research grants (BI)
A number of our faculty are principal investigators in either national or european research projects. Many of these projects have funds for research grants. These are not PhD grants, you will be a researcher for the project, but in most cases it is possible (in fact you are encouraged) to do your PhD at the same time. Funding for fees must be worked out separately.
We will be posting an updating a number of opportunities offered to MAP-i candidates. Please refer to the Projects Research grants link.
